Steam Blocking Granny Squares Made Simple

Creator Knotsojuls recently shared her go-to method for finishing granny squares,
and it’s a game changer for speed and ease!

While wet blocking is a classic technique, steam blocking offers a much quicker
alternative, especially for fibres like acrylic that respond well to heat.

By carefully pinning each square into shape, gently steaming until warm and
slightly damp, then pressing flat to dry, you can achieve beautifully
even, professional-looking results in a fraction of the time.

Always remember to check the best blocking method

for your specific yarn and handle heat with care to avoid damaging fibres.

We’re so excited to showcase our latest collaboration with talented artist
Kat Leonardo (@tataykatelyn)

Kat took on a large crochet project, creating “The Giant Smiski”
using plush yarn, and we’re thrilled to be part of the journey.

“The Giant Smiski is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.
I’ve always wanted to do a big piece and work with plush yarn as I thought it’d be a fun long-term project  as opposed to my shorter projects.
Having the idea of creating it as a series also interested me, getting to share my journey of creation with everyone as I don’t normally share that.”

Want to create your own?

Kat has also designed a mini Smiski version so you can try it yourself at home!
Plus, she’s sharing her process step-by-step in a YouTube tutorial,
making it easy to follow along whether you’re a beginner or seasoned maker.

How to Mix Almost Any Watercolour
Shade Using Just 3 Colours

Did you know you can create almost any watercolour shade using just three colours?
Watercolour artist Emilie Otto shares her favourite colour-mixing tips, proving you don’t need a huge paint collection to achieve beautiful, vibrant results. With the right primary trio and a little experimentation, you can unlock an endless range of hues.

Start with a Simple Primary Palette

Choose:
One warm or cool red
One warm or cool blue
One warm or cool yellow

By adjusting the ratio of each colour, you can create:
Soft neutrals and earthy tones
Vibrant secondary colours (greens, purples, oranges)
Subtle skin tones
Moody shadow shades

Limiting your palette doesn’t limit your creativity, it actually expands it. Working with just three colours helps you better understand colour relationships and creates harmony across your artwork.
